This week, as we wrapped up our series called The Renewal of All Things, Anthony Opliger laid out a couple of practical ways that we as a church and as individuals can invite the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us as He goes about making all things new.

The practical idea aimed at individuals was to begin to pray, daily, for the Spirit to do His work in and through us so that we can participate with Him in renewing all things, even using these specific lyrics from the hymn “Sprit of the Living God.”

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me
Melt me, mold me, fill me, send me
Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me

Before the response song of the 10:45am gathering, I threw out the suggestion that if you use song lyrics as your prayer, consider actually singing them. Not performing them or to pray these prayers in front of others where the songs can be heard, but just so you slow down and let the lyrics take on a unique life in your prayers as you start your time of reading the Bible, praying, silence, or any other discipline.

This idea of singing/praying a short chorus of invitation to the Spirit of God got me thinking of other songs that have served this purpose in my life. I wanted to share a few of those as fuel for those in our community who will be praying in this way.

Holy Spirit // Jesus Culture
Holy Spirit You are welcome here
come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory God is what our hearts long for
to be overcome by Your Presence Lord

Come Like the Dawn // Ryan Williams
You are welcome here
You are welcome here
You are welcome here, Holy One

Spirit of God, come like the dawn, open the heavens on us
we want to know You, we want to know You

All of the verses on this one are beautiful, simple, and repetitive. Each serves as a prayer unto itself for the Spirit to come and make Himself known to us.

We Are Listening // Adam Clark
Here we are
speak Lord
we are listening
we are listening

Living Water // Adam Clark
We drink it in, we pour it out, Living Water stream through us
You wear away the hardened places, open channels for Your love
We come to You thirsty, and we come away like rivers
Holy Spirit…fill us up…overflowing…with Your love

Prayers of the People // The Brilliance
You hear us calling, You hear us calling, Abba Father
Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

There are many more great songs aimed at inviting the Spirit to do His work in and through us. Do you have other songs that you sing/pray with this aim?
